My family will be spending 6 days in Rome through New Years. We will spend one night/2 days in Florence before coming to Rome. I am looking for advice on a day trip to take from Rome. We are a family of 6 adults (youngest 17). Any suggestions? Is the trip to Pompeii advisable given the shorter days? I may have lost my families interest in museums by this point so maybe something a bit different than Rome? Assisi? Oviedo? Tuscany sounds beautiful but what is advisable at this time of year?
Thank you pointing me in the right direction. Much is reported on day trips but not necessarily in Winter.
Go to Ostia Antica. Easily accessible by train from the Pyramid station, takes less than an hour. Very interesting, similar to Pompeii without the long travel time.
I presume you mean Orvieto, not Oviedo. Also easily accessible by train, about 90 minutes. Beautiful hilltop town.
If over a Sunday, spend some time on the Appian Way and the catacombs in that area. Remember you will have pretty short days.
I would pass on a day trip to Naples and Pompeii at that time of year. It is doable in the summer with more light.
Agree with Patricia on both suggestions. Trust me, a trip from Rome to Pompeii will be a long, long, long day. And that time of the year will make it seem even longer.
