Day Trip from Rome

Hi, our family wants to plan a day trip from Rome and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a place they loved to visit? I was thinking of Florence or Tuscany? We probably wont do a guided tour and just visit on our own. We are traveling with our 4 kids (ages 21,20,20 &15).

Thanks!

I loved Orvieto, which is a reasonable train ride. From the train station, you cross the street and take a funicular up to the historic area of the town. The Cathedral is gorgeous, and there are some interesting Etruscan sites.

Florence needs three nights and you need a car for the Tuscan countryside. Probably the best day trip from Rome’s Termini station is Orvieto by direct train (1h 30m). You then need to ride a funicular to get there: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Orvieto.
Another option would be a direct train to Naples Central station (1h 15m).
