Day trip from Positano to Paestum - Transportation Logistics

We are staying for a week in Positano in early October, and would like to take a day trip to Paestum. The transportation logistics are proving to be very challenging. We could take the bus, but my research suggests that it's at least a three hour trip each way. We could get there by a combination of ferry (assuming they are running) and train, or ferry and bus; however, there are no early ferries from Positano to Salerno, and the last ferry from Salerno to Positano leaves at 5:10. Due to some big gaps in the timetables, it seems like we would only have about an hour to actually see the sights in Paestum. So here is what I am thinking about: take an early bus from Positano to Amalfi; catch the 8:50 ferry from Amalfi to Salerno, arriving in Salerno at about 9:30; rent a car in Salerno and drive to Paestum (about a 45 minute drive); tour Paestum; return to Salerno in time to drop off the rental car and catch the ferry at 5:10. I would appreciate any feedback on this plan. Thanks in advance.

I think you should consider renting a car for the day.

Like you, we found the transportation logistics "challenging," when we tried to get to Paestum from Sorrento, a couple of years ago. We wound up booking a day trip with Golden Tours. The guide was good; and the price, reasonable. I'm remembering 40 euros/pp. Their bus left from Sorrento. I think, but am not sure, we picked up some people at another location; and I'm not sure they operate in October. At any rate, imo, it's worthwhile to check them out for a really easy way to get to see Paestum. If that doesn't work, I agree with the poster who recommended the rental car option.
