We will be in Positano for a week in May and want to do a day trip to Civita. Suggestions on the best way to get there? We are willing to rent a car if needed.

There are several "Civita's" in Italy. If you're talking about Civita di Bagnoregio (the one Rick likes), it's a 5-6 hour journey each way from Positano, whether you drive or go to Salerno and take the train. Civita is almost 400 Km from Positano. Too far for a day trip.
