I haven't booked our Colosseum underground tickets yet because I don't know how early we can get to Rome from Orvieto on a direct train. I'm having a problem using the Trenitalia site. This trip isn't till May but we would like to plan a full day in Rome.

On the trenitalia site you need to use the Italian names for cities such as Roma instead of Rome - could that be the problem you're having?

May 2025 may not be on schedule yet
Search using same day of week for an idea of the departure times
Schedules don’t change much
Station names
Orvieto
Roma Termini
Be sure to set the clock back to 1:00 am to see all trains
Or try using the app ( but May schedule probably not up or at least not complete-should be by Dec 12)
Random day next week shows first train at 4:30 am journey is about 1 hr 20 min. Then trains about every hour
Random day in May shows same

Both of your suggestions worked....I needed to us Roma plus the fact that it was too on Trenitalia. I was directed to different sites which would allow me to book even if it was too early on Trenitalia. I will wait..

When scheduling this trip, keep in mind that the Orvieto train station is at the lower level, well below the elevation of the walled città vecchia. It will take a bit of time to get downhill to the station.
