Day trip from Orvieto

Hi,
I will be in Orvieto with my family for a few days, and would like to spend a day seeing the area. Ideally I would like someone to drive us around, so we can relax and see some scenery, and maybe go to a winery. I found a tour guide who recommended a day trip to Perugia and Assisi, but it's very expensive (350 euros!!). Does anyone have a guide they recommend so I can shop around? I am also looking into renting a car, but am not sure I can do so from Orvieto for one day (also, this does not seem as relaxing as having someone else drive). Any advice on a relaxing day around the Orveito area? THANKS

No advice on relaxing closer to Orvieto but, Siena which is about 2 hours by train is definitely worth a trip.

Joy, from Orvieto you can take the bus to Bagnoregio (near Civita de Bagnoregio) I'm sure you have seen pictures of this place. It's perched on a pinnacle in a grand canyon...Italy's ultimate hill town (Rick Steves. The bus ticket is 4 euro round trip.

Joy, did you book a place to stay yet? If not check out Casa Selita B&B....it looks great and not a one bad review, it's beautiful!

We did Cortona as a day trip from Orvieto. Easily done on the train. It's an easy bus ride from the train station in Cortona-Camucia to the upper town.

Thank you everyone! I will be travelling with my 79 year old mother, so I can't pick a town with TOO many hills (eg Civita). We are staying at La Magnolia which sounds very nice. I just hope all ash clouds stay away!
