We are staying in Naples for 3 days this month and would like to take a day trip to both Pompeii and Positano on the same day. We'd leave for Pompeii early in the morning so we can be there when they open and spend 3-4 hours there. From there, we'd like to spend the rest of the day in Positano. We plan to wander around and check out the shops there. Is this realistic? Thanks for your help.

Positano is not bad of a drive from Naples at all. If you feel you will be out of energy, you can stop in Sorrento which still has lovely shops and food but if you are out for the handmade (expensive!) clothing of Positano, it shouldn't be a problem. Traffic has dropped down a lot since August.

My family and I stayed in Sorrento for 5 beautiful days. We went to Pompeii for the day. We were there for more than 4 hours. It is bigger than u think and since my family enjoy history we checked out every area. Far back there is a area that looked like a mini colosseum. Across from it was a gate that lead into a garden. Positano was a day trip for us also. All I can say if you enjoy the beauti of your surroundings look at every thing it will take more than one day and since my family enjoy exploring every nook it was while. Besides you can't always count on transportation being on time.

Consider taking in Herculaneum while near the site. The ruins are actually better preserved than Pompeii.
