day trip from Milan

Due to a flight cancellation at the end of our trip, we have an extra day in Milan. We're already planning on going to DaVinci's Last Supper, La Scala and the Duomo on our first day in Milan. Any suggestions for our extra day? Stay in Milan? Day trip? We will have already spent several days in Lake Como.

We spent a lovely day in Bergamo. It was fun to ride the funiculars and explore the Citta Alta and the village on the hill top. (http://greetingsfrommattandlaura.blogspot.com/2009/02/bergamo.html). There is also a nice art museum in the lower town (or upper town depending on the rennovations).

I would also visit the cemetery in Milan. It was my second favorite site in Milan. The tombstones are beautiful and unique. It is truly a one of kind place. (http://greetingsfrommattandlaura.blogspot.com/2009/02/art-in-situ.html)

I did a day trip from Torino to Cinque Terre once and it was a fantastic trip. Should be similar to Milan. Train down and then walk/train/boat to each city. Definately worth it if you haven't been there before.

You don't say when you'll be there, and that would influence your options. We enjoyed people-watching along Via Dante (pedestrian only, with tons of walking fashion plates in this fashion capital) and it leads to the Castello Sforzesco and the gardens behind that.

Verona is only about 1.5 hours away by train. If you have not been there before, it is a very manageable place for a day.

Definately daytrip out of Milan. You will have already seen Milans big sights. I suggest short/cheap train it to lovely, tranquil Varenna on gorgeous Lake Como. Walk around have lunch and enjoy some of Italys best. It is stunning.

Since you will have already spent several days at Lake Como, you might not be interested in another lake, but we loved Lake Maggiore every bit as much as Lake Como. I believe the train ride to Stresa is about the same as to Varenna from Milan. There is a beautiful flower lined walkway all along the lakefront with gorgeous views of the islands and mountains. Also, a marvelous boat ride out to some of the islands where you can get off for awhile and then catch the next boat back to Stresa. The gondola ride in Stresa has fantastic views of the lake and islands from the top.

Thanks so very much to all who answered! You've been most helpful. I feel that we now have more options for that extra day in Italy.
