Hello! We are from Colorado and would like to get a taste of the Swiss Alps while staying with friends in Menaggio. What town or city would be a good day trip for us? We will have a car but, train travel is fun, too! As always, thanks for your advice!

From Menaggio you can take a bus to Lugano. Timetable here: http://www.menaggio.com/ita/e-lakes/Orari_bus.pdf
But since you have a car you can also drive.
There is no train at Menaggio, the nearest is Lugano.
Menaggio is a beautiful place on the edge of the Alps. Many places to drive to. Lugano, Bellinzona, St Moritz.

We too are from Colorado ! We stayed in Varenna, and one day, took the ferry to Menaggio, rode the bus into Lugano, took the train down to Como, and then rode the hydrofoil back into Varenna - it was a delightful day !
