Hi has anyone done a day trip from Lucca to Cinque Terre? If so would appreciate any guidance about best way to do this and make most of the day?

You could take the train Lucca to Monterosso al mare the last town of Cinque Terre and hike back to Vernazza.
Or take the train from town to town along the Cinque Terre

You can do it and enjoy almost the whole day in Cinque Terre. Look at trenitalia.it and click on the language flag at the top and enter your info. Leave Lucca about 7 and the trip to La Spezia is about 90 minutes and you change at Viareggio or Pisa S. Rossore. At La Spezia take the CT Express to the village of your choice. There are no express trains and you've got to stamp your ticket at the station before boarding.
