Day Trip from Lake Como to Lugano

My wife and I will be staying on Lake Como (Varenna) for 3 days and would like to take a day trip to Lugano Switzerland. We won't have a car so looking at best options.

Thanks,
TC

I Just read a piece Rick Steves wrote here on the website about Lugano as we will be there 2 nights later this year. It has some info about the train station, the city, a self guided walk and some day trips from there. I just googled Rick Steves Lugano and found it. There's even more info in the RS Switzerland guide book.

Boat across the lake from Varenna to Menaggio

Then once in Menaggio walk from the dock to Piazza Garibaldi (the main Piazza about 150m north of the dock).
Take bus number C12 (schedules below, but now only winter timetables are available).

I’ve driven by car a few times from Menaggio. It’s a 45 min drive. By bus it’s not much longer.

Roberto is giving you the fastest way to get there. To take a train to Lugano you have to get clear down to the train station in Como to go north to Lugano. If you see the route by bus on www.rome2rio, you will see it is a parallel route. We took the train from Como to Zurich and passed by Lugano. It looked lovely!!
