Day trip from Florence with kids/teen

Hi!

Our family is traveling this March to Italy, visiting Rome (4 nights), and Florence (5 nights). We already have a good idea of the things we are doing in these places. However, I'm having a hard time deciding the best use of our 1 day that we are reserving for a day trip out of Florence. It's important to mention this will happen during Easter week, and days available are either the Friday (29th), or Saturday (30).

We are looking to have a different experience, so I thought going to smaller towns via rental car would fit our needs.
The kids want the obligatory Pisa picture, but I rather see a different location. We are open to use public transportation as well, but we are used to driving in different countries, and small, windy roads if that matters. As another note- we usually stay away from large tour groups, as we prefer to decide on food by ourselves- given that my youngest has a food allergy. We all love nature, and I love pottery, textiles, etc.

Appreciate any recommendations in advance!

If you’re going to Pisa, Lucca is close to it. You can rent bikes and ride the medieval wide wall. Both are easy by train.

I vote Lucca too! I love riding bikes around the walls and the feel of the town, you could do it all in one day, all by train which would be easiest.

Visit Siena followed by the Chianti villages ( Greve, Castellina, Radda, Panzano and more) between Siena and Florence.

As others have pointed-out, Siena and Lucca would be easy locations to visit with kids. Being that it's Easter-week, the churches and shops will be decorated, week long events happening such as religious processions (particularly on Good Friday), unique celebrations and special souvenirs available, like elaborately decorated eggs.

Siena with its massive Piazza del Campo is a big space the kids can run around.

Lucca is a favorite with its massive walls you can rent bicycles to ride around, pick-up some picnic items and make riding/touring/meal of it.

Thank you all for the recommendations! Will talk to the family and get a plan together!
