Day Trip from Florence to San Marino

Has anyone ever made the trip to San Marino? Thoughts on whether it was worth it? We have four nights in Florence and have seen many of the nearby sites already - yet we don’t want to stay elsewhere because we utilized hotel points for a great deal in the city.

As a result, we’ve been looking at further flung day trip options - fully acknowledging that we’ll spend a long time in transit and they may make for long days. We thought about Venice, but have done that before - and we’ll likely do the Cinque Terre one day, as well.

San Marino is interesting as an additional country to check off the list. It’s not convenient from Florence by public transit, so we thought of renting a car just for a day to make the trek there and back (nearly a 3 hour drive).

Has anyone made this trip as a day trip before? Any recommendations on route or possible stops along the way? And am I missing a great public transit route to do this that isn’t obvious?

Thanks in advance!

Too far.

Unless you have visited everything else in Tuscany or even Emilia Romagna, find somewhere else to visit.

By car the fastest way is via Bologna (A1 and A14). You can also take the Muraglione Pass. Shorter, but curvy and not faster (actually way slower).
