We will be in Florence for a week in mid October. I have been a few times and love the place. Instead of day tripping to the west coast, I am considering a day trip to the Adriatic. It seems less crowded and likely to be a more authentic experience.. It appears to be harder to get to, with one or two train changes to get to one of the smaller coastal towns. ( Cesenatico, Rimini, Ravenna). I realize getting there is harder but am interested in thoughts as to whether or not it would be worth it. I feel like spending the day in a smaller fishing village might be a very memorable experience and worth the extra travel..
Also planning a day trip to Orvieto and appreciate thoughts there. It appears, by contrast, easier to get to and to get around.
Thank you
Actually the Romagna coast (Rimini etc.) is the most crowded stretch of coast in Italy (and probably Europe) during summer. However you are going in October, and that means that the heavy crowds will be long gone no matter which coast you go to.
Not sure which 'small fishing village' you have in mind. None of the towns you mention are small fishing villages, they are quite large towns. That area is one of the largest urbanized areas in Italy.
If you are considering a day trip to the coast from Florence, you may want to consider the Tuscan coast. It's much easier to reach from Florence if all you have is one day (consider also that in October days are shorter). Viareggio is a larger town with a fishing port, but if you like smaller, then Castiglioncello might fit the requirement and is really quaint.
Thank you Roberto.. Castiglioncello looks accessible from Florence and quite nice.... Do you have a preference between there and Cinque Terre? I appreciate your help
I loved Orvieto and revommend it, either for a half or full day. Shouldn't you take advantage of off-season and see San G or Siena instead? Any chance the Siena Duomo floor is uncovered in October 2016?
I don't know about Tuscany, but ocean towns can be shuttered and dull, offseason. We saw that on an island cruise (Rome to Barcelona), including Sardinia and Elba, in October.
