4 of us (all active retirees), are planning to hire a private driver for a daytrip out of the city when we visit Florence in August. We know we want to visit a winery or two but would love to have your suggestions as to where we should visit. There are so many options/places to see, I fear I'll try to fit too much in and we'll end up feeling like we've run a marathon. I welcome your suggestions on what towns/area we should visit, how much time should we spend at each stop, etc. Any suggestions as to where we could end our day with a nice meal somewhere memorable would also be appreciated.
If you have not been there before check out Siena. An easy and wonderful day trip. Lucca is great too!
Siena is lovely, and well worth a trip, though we only had 2 hours there, we could have spent much longer if had time. We also liked San Gimignano and wished we had more time to explore the town, though it was pretty crowded. So many wonderful places to see in Tuscany, you can't go wrong!
A little googling will turn up quite few all-day small-group tours with stops at wineries. 150 EUR pp seems to be the going rate with lunch. Double that for a custom tour for just your group.
Look at this, several to choose from.
€100 per. w/o lunch.
San Gimignano and Volterra were my favorites, especially after the buses have left. At night, Siena is magical.
