Bologna is 40 minutes by train, has a beautiful old town, and wonderful food (I think the best in Italy, but don't tell anyone I said so!).
Does four days mean five nights in Florence?
There’s a direct bus from Florence to Siena (1h 15m) that drops you off across the street from the old town. The train from Florence to Siena takes longer and drops you off further from the old town.
Another easy day trip is taking a direct train from Florence SM Novella station to the Pisa S. Rossore station (1h 30m) that’s closer to the leaning tower and Field of Dreams than the other train stations in Pisa.
Another good day trip from Florence by direct train is Lucca (1h 30m).
Bologna is a good choice and very quick on the high speed train. Arezzo is another nice town to visit that doesn't usually have the crowds of other places and it is very beautiful.
Siena would be my first, second and third choice. Lucca would be trying very hard to get into the lineup. Bus to Siena, train to Lucca.
In addition to what already suggested above, I might add Pistoia.
