We want to take a guided tour day trip from Florence to Venice in September -- any ideas?
This might be a little tough. To do it on your own.....It is 2.39 hours each way from Venice to Florence on the Eurostar (high speed) train. Round trip transportation on Eurostar will cost you about $250 to $325 (for 2 people) depending on whether you go 1st or 2nd class. You would have about 5-6 hours to spend there making for an 11 hour day.
I did see one option at viator.com for a guided trip. Cost started at $267 per person and time of trip estimated at 11 hours.
We went on our own a few years ago. Took the EuroStar train as the other poster mentioned. It was about 60E back then when the Euro was $1.20.
We had 5 hours in Venice. Left on the earliest train from Florence, got into Venice at 11AM, had a really early lunch, then walked as much as we could. Venice isn't hard to walk around in, but you can get lost! Good thing my hubby is great at directions.
We saw the major sights, took a guided tour of the Jewish Ghetto (synagogues) Saw the Rialto bridge and took the elevator to the top of the tower. didn't go into the church, missed the other major sights - no time.
If I had it to do again, I'd spend at least 1 night in Venice so I could explore and savor this beautiful city.
Earliest Eurostar out of Florence appears to be 0838 arriving Venice Santa Lucia at 1117. Departures from Venice Santa Lucia to Florence would be either departing 1643 (4:43) with arrival Florence at 1922 (7:22) or departure 1836 (6:36) arrival 2122 (9:22). Cost per person each way for 2nd class is 32.3 euros ($48.50) or 1st class 48.5 euros ($73) based on $1.50 exchange rate making round trip for 2 either $194 or $292 if you were to do it on your own.
