Day trip from Florence to Pisa

I'm traveling this summer with my 12 year old. Climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa is a high priority for him. I have a bum foot. (And I know he can't go up by himself because he's not 14; I don't know that I would want him to anyway.) I am sure I can make it up and down the tower. But I'd like to minimize other walking on this adventure. I know we can take a train from Florence to Pisa. Then we can catch a local bus to the tower, though I'm not sure how close the local buses get? Alternatively I know there are tours from Florence to Pisa via motor coach, though again I'm not sure where those motor coaches drop people off. Is there an advantage for one transit method over the other, particularly given my desire to avoid extra walking to the extent possible?

Thanks so much!

You can also take a taxi from the station. It's not that expensive, it's just a couple of kilometers (1.2 miles).

I agree with Roberto, a taxi will get you closest and will cost less than a tour bus.

Great suggestion. Thank you. I assume there would be a taxi stand at the train station. What about going back? I think I have read that taxis are not generally available to hail in Italy, that you need to find a taxi stand?

you can easily find a taxi in front of the Pisa Centrale Station to the cathedral campus entrance. The campus is paved and easy to walk around, not terribly big. The bus back to the train station stops across the street and maybe a block from the entrance.

The tower climb is a ramp, not stairs. I didn't do it, friends did and told me the hard part is the disorientation - uphill ramp combined with significant tilt.

Take the time to see the cathedral and the baptistry while you're there.

We were just there a week ago. As others have said, you can easily get a taxi at the station when you arrive. On the other hand, it's an easy walk and lots of interesting shops along the way and other options to get a taxi if you decide to walk a little in either direction.

The only other suggestions I would make is to get there early. We were surprised that it wasn't really crowded at least in the morning, but hours later it was. We went on a weekday, but I would imagine it will be more crowded in the summer. Also, most of the grass area is closed off, but there was one section that was open and people were just having picnics, and lying out taking selfies and posing in various positions. Fun to watch. Actually, people were taking pictures everywhere.

Make sure you see the tower from different angles.
