Are there any good day tours from Rome to Pompeii and what are the prices?

Katherine: I did Pompeii on my own as a day trip from Naples. You could conceivably do the same thing from Rome but it would be a long day. Train from Rome to Naples then change to the Circumvesuviana train, which makes a stop at Pompeii.

Otherwise, do an internet search for companies and prices. I did and there are quite a few.

Going to Pompeii from Rome is very easy. The trip from Rome to Naples takes about an hour and then the commuter train takes another half hour. It's all really quite simple. There is no need to take an organized tour from Rome. If you want a tour of the ruins you can book one onsite. These guides are usually very good but talk to a few of them to get a feel for their style.

If you need specifics on how to book the trains just let us know.

Back in 2010, my friend and I debated about doing this on our own vs. using the wonderful advice from this forum. It was our first time in Italy and we just felt overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to do this ourselves so we decided to do it the "wimpy" way and we booked a tour. We used Carrani bus tours. Just google it, I just looked it up and easily found it but not savvy enough to post the link here. It included a short tour of Naples, a quick cameo factory tour (it was right outside the entrance at Pompeii) and lunch (so-so). We were picked up from our hotel at 7 am and dropped off by 8. It was a long day but the nice thing about it was we didn't have to worry about anything. We were only in Pompeii itself for 3 hours, enough for a first visit but I definitely want to go back. Travel time was about 3 hrs each way. At that time it was about €130.
