Day Tour from Rome to Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii

I will be in Rome for one week in October 2023.
Looking for recommendations for a one day tour from Rome that includes Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii.

Are there small group tours or are most of the tours on a large bus with 40-50 people?
I prefer a tour over managing the details of the train, Circumvesuviana, Pompeii guide, lunch, etc. Thank you!

The problem is that is a huge day trip with long hours and distances. You could check with the TI when you hit Rome but I would be surprised if you found both Vesuvius and Pompeii. I am sure you would see Pompeii trips with short stop at the museum in Naples. Good luck.

We did this small group day tour with The Roman Guy (aka The Tour Guy), and we were very happy with it.

We didn't climb Mount Vesuvius, but we saw it.

We had only 5 guests on our tour, but that was in November 2021, when tourism numbers were lower. However, the maximum is 18.

Here are some of their other small group options that include Pompeii: https://theromanguy.com/tours/italy/naples-pompeii-amalfi-coast?guests=1&travelDate=

I saw some tours on-line from Rome to Pompeii and Vesuvius. I'm sure they are on large buses, but you can look through them. It is a very long, 12-hour, day. You definitely need a guide for Pompeii; we went there on our RS tour and the guide was wonderful!

You can definitely do this in a day. The fast train from Rome to Naples is about 1hr 10 min, but expect delays & lots of running around, as Italy has horrible signage so expect to be asking many questions. Take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi about another 35 min. Frecciarossa train about 52 euro one way. Circumvesuviana train about 8 euro. Once at pompei there are group tours for around 45 euro I think they limit them to 18 people. They also have a bus you can take to Vesuvius. I never did this, but I assume it takes you to top. Probably a very full day to see it all. Lunch available at Pompeii site or outside gates

City of Wonders has a day bus tour for approximately $140 pp

I believe this is the same tour we did in 2019 with City Wonders. It was a LONG day, but we expected that, and thought it was enjoyable anyway. It was relaxing to just ride the bus and not have to think too much…

It was a big bus tour (40-50 people as I remember). We had just finished a RS Tour that ended in Rome, and the difference was obvious! But I thought the on-bus guide did a fine job and kept people organized and (mostly) on time, and she gave information about the sites in an engaging way. At Pompeii, the group was split into two smaller cohorts and each had a specialized guide. Overall we only saw the highlights (at Pompeii maybe 3 hours), but that was enough for us.

At Vesuvius there was just enough time to hike up the steep path to the crater, take some photos, and get back down. Again, enough for us, but not a lot of time to linger.

There was also a pretty decent pizza lunch provided as well. Overall I’d recommend this tour, but be mindful of the schedule and the time constraints at each location.
