Day stops from Catania to Palermo

We will be driving around Sicily a few days at the end of May are there any good points to stop of along the way if only for an hour or two? Maybe some local spots that aren’t so touristy? We plan on driving the south part the island taking the long trip from Syracusa to Palermo then Palermo to Catania on our way back so hopefully driving most of the island by the time we’re done. Thanks in advance !

Oh my gosh, with a car the possibilities are endless. We can give you some suggestions but in your research look at videos, websites, instagram photos and see what matches your interest or catches your eye. I assume you are following the coast on your journey around the island. Also it would be helpful if you give us more info about your trip in general and specifically what places you already have included in your plans, and time allotted. If you are driving from Siracusa to Palermo along the southern coast here are some random suggestions that will not be filled with hordes of tourists. Obviously you could spend a few hours to days at any of these, that is up to you. take a look at the town of Scicli. I love to explore small towns like this. Have you considered a stop at the Scala dei turchi? My strongest recs are for a visit to the archeological park at Selinunte. Lots of ruins in an expansive park right on the coast and unlike Agrigento it is not crowded. Absolutely fascinating. Nearby is a very picturesque small fishing town of Mazara del Vallo noted for its mix of Christian, Arab and Jewish influence. The historic center is not very big and you could see it all in a few hours. Make sure you go see the Dancing Satyr that was pulled from the sea not too long ago. This town was one of my favorites on my trip around Sicily three years ago. If you like beaches maybe a stop at San Vito lo Capo, or Castellammare del Golfo. Are you planning to visit Segesta or Erice from Palermo? If not, both are very worthy destinations. If you want to see nature try the Zingaro Nature Reserve and Scopello. If you have interest in wine, maybe a short stop in Marsala or a nearby vineyard.

From Palermo to Catania are you again following the coast or cutting inland? If following the coast, Cefalu is very pretty and the old town is not very big. Near Cefalu is Caccamo with its castle. If you like churches and religious sites, take a look at Tindari. I had seen lots of beautiful photos on Instagram of Tindari and added it to my itinerary. There is a sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna and Child. The sanctuary sits on top of a precipice overlooking beautiful coastal scenery. There is also an archeological site with an ampitheater right there too. On your way to Catania are you stopping at Taormina? Both Cefalu and Taormina are very popular tourist sites so they will be more crowded. There are so many picturesque small towns. You will need to do research to see what fits your travel style.
