Day in Sorrento

We have a day in Sorrento and are thinking of going to Positano for the day and returning to Sorrento that evening I would like to see some of the Amalfi Coast. Is this possible and if so what mode of transportation makes the most sense?

Go by boat! Great views of the shore...and it's pretty quick, allowing you more time in Sorrento and Positano!
It is very possible, but depends on how much time you really want to spend in Sorrento.

Number 1 choice, boat. Number two choice, taxi or private driver, forget the bus.

We too went to Positano for a day. If you don't want to pay for a private driver, the bus is a good inexpensive option. Just sit on the right hand side of the bus for the best views. I would try to return by boat for a different perspective of the coastline. Boats weren't running when we were there, otherwise we would have done that.

I took the bus to Positano, then boat to Amalfi and back to Sorrento. The bus was inexpensive and fun; great views from the road over the ocean. I'd do it again. It's also worth taking a boat for part of it, so you see the views from the water.

One warning, though; some boats are faster than others. To get from Positano to Sorrento you go around a big horn, as you can see on a map. Our ride ended up taking 3+ hours and wasted a lot of our afternoon. So rather than taking the next boat that shows up at the dock, find out how long it takes. I've learned from traveling, and especially from this experience, the importance of planning in advance. With the web you can find out schedules so that you use your time most efficiently.

BTW, in Sorrento be sure to have drinks near sunset at the Foreigners Club. Incredible views over the water!

We took the 11 am ferry from Sorrento to Positano (stopped here for shopping and lunch) then Positano to Amalfi (short stay to look around), and Amalfi back to Positano (just a quick stop to pick up passengers) and on to Sorrento. We were back in Sorrento by 5 - just in time for a drink at the bar where the webcam is!

It was a perfect day.
