We will be in Bolzano this September for 5 days and would like to do some day hiking and explore the area. Should we rent a car or do local transportation. What sights and day hikes near Bolzano are the best?

Do you have Rick Steves’ Italy guidebook? He covers the Alpe di Siusi very well and you can get there by bus and gondola from Bolzano. Also Google info on the Renon Plateau above Bolzano. You reach it on a dramatic lift, there is a lovely old train to take you to several spots. Ask the TI in Bolzano for info.
