Day hikes around Lake Garda?

So, we have 3-4 days before we start a self guided bike trip in Italy. Hubby wants to find a place to do some day hiking north of Bologna. I thought of Lake Garda. Anyone with some experience at the lake for a good base, a B & B, and if there is some good hiking to be done? We are going end of April, so can't be in the mountains north, it will be too snowy on the trails. Would really like to find a place where we can walk out the front door, hike for 4-8 miles and be back to the hotel before dinner time.

  1. Town to base in
  2. B & B or hotel
  3. Know of any trails, or a website that would be useful to find same

There is great hiking on Monte Baldo; stay in Malcescine and you can walk right from your door. Them out a in is laced with enough trails to keep you busy several days; you can use the gondola to assist with ascent or descent if you choose.

We were there around 10 April a few years ago; hiked to the mid-station the rode to the top, where there was still a bit of snow around but great views. We rode back down to the mid-station and walked down from there, using a different trail than the ascent. There are trails on the side that do not go near the gondola if you prefer that.

I can highly recommend Erika Hotel in Malcesine. She is perhaps the best hotelier I have ever encountered. Lovely rooms, fabulous breakfast, delightful host!
