My Wife and I are looking for 1 or 2 day trips from Bologna. We are staying in the historic area, close to the train station, but open to hiring a driver to discover the right town or village. Thank you Peter
Thank you so much for the Ravenna & Modena suggestions? Have you or know someone who has visited Rimini Italy?
Larger chic city: Verona is under an hour direct on the fast train.
Historic, UNESCO: Ferrara is less than 30 minutes by train.
Food: Modena (balsamic vinegar), Reggio Emilia (cheese) and Parma (ham) all lie in a line along the same train track
And Florence is 30 minutes away but most people consider that a destination not a day trip.
Have a great trip,

Wikipedia has extensive information on Rimini. It was one of the 1st international Beach Resorts. It has a wide easy grade beach. They list all of the historic eras. It looks like it was where the action was from ancient times. I would go there with the caution that there will hoards of people at the beach in the warm months.
Lesser known Rimini is also the birthplace of Fellini - but it is mostly a beach resort town now.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Very much appreciated!
Ravenna is great. We did Rimini beach years ago and it was not nice at all. The beach was nasty and smelled.
If you do end up in Modena, be sure to visit the Ferrari museum. It was a highlight for my wife and me, and she's not a car buff.
