Day Bag

Is there a size requirement on what size bag you are able to bring to attractions in Italy- Vatican, St Peters, St Marks, Doges Palace etc? I want to have something for my travel guide, camera, water, snack, but don't want to have to check it every where we go. Thanks

There are sites that require you to check all bags no matter the size. The main two for Rome are the Borghese gallery and the Scavi tour at St. Peter's. The Vatican museums do have a size limit for what you can bring inside so if it's a small bag you should be fine. Donna

You'll have less of a problem with a messenger style bag than with a backpack style bag.

I had no problem with a messenger bag at the Vatican. At the Borghese Gallery, you will probably have to check your bag, but if there is something you want to keep with you (wallet, meds, water bottle) they will give you an opaque plastic bag to carry into the gallery. Not as bad as it sounds. I've done this a couple of times, checked my camera and main bag and used their plastic bag, it worked out fine.

I found a bag that was perfect for our trip at REI. It was a convertable Victronix bag. I could either wear as a shoulder bag across my chest, especially in cities or crowded areas. Or clip the straps to wear as a small back pack. It has a small side pocket for a water bottle, and fit everything we might need for a day of sightseeing, camera, maps, snacks, eyeglass cases, etc.,
