Daughters Sr. Trip Graduation

I am taking my wife, Son, and Daughter to Italy in May 2025 for her Sr Trip Graduation. I have been to Italy about 5 times but they have never been.

I want to spend about 4-5 days in Rome and then head down to the Amalfi Coast for about 4 days as well. We will scoot back up to Rome to come home.

I want to know if it would be worth a full day while in Rome to take a train up to Pisa? This will be a laid back family trip with some adventure seeking young adults but not a whirlwind trip be any stretch.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

...if it would be worth a full day while in Rome to take a train up to Pisa?...

In my opinion, it would not be worth spending a full day to go to Pisa. Others may disagree. We've been there, and seeing the tower and the baptistery were neat, but not awe inspiring, and not worth a special trip from Rome. There is way more than enough to keep the whole family busy for five full days in Rome itself. If you want to do a side trip, consider Ostia Antica. Easy to get to using public transit, usually not very crowded, and with an early start one can be back in Rome by 3 p.m. Just offering an alternative day trip.

Of course, since it's her graduation trip, it that's what she wants to see, then it will be worth it.

The view of the tower, the cathedral and the baptistery is unforgettable. The tower is obviously the main attraction but the cathedral is also gorgeous.

The train ride is about 3 hours each way so if your daughter wants to go, it’s definitely doable and worth it.

For example, you can leave Rome on the 9:10am train and arrive in Pisa at 12:11pm. You can spend about 5 hours in Pisa for the sights and lunch and return on the 5:22pm train arriving in Rome at 8:25pm.

Hello c_lsafety, and welcome to the forums!

You are the only one that can really answer that question. Is Pisa on your "must see" list? If so it is possible but as others have pointed out you will be in transit for probably 5-6 hours to accomplish this. In general 5+ hours is well outside my comfortable day trip limit but if all comes down to what do you want to do and see?

If the leaning tower is just something you're interested in seeing "if it's easy" there are many other attractions that are closer as day trips than Pisa. You could be on the train for 3 hours (1.5 each way) and see Florence including David and many other famous Renaissance artworks and buildings. People also make the 4+ hour trek to see Pompeii from Rome but it all depends on what you find worth the trouble and the time.

There is plenty in Rome to fill your time there but it's your trip and up to you to define what is most important.

Have a great trip,
