Dark Rome (City Wonders) Tour of the Colosseum (including Underground,) Forum and Palantine Hill

Hello Fellow Travelers:
We will end our Europe Your Way Tour in Rome the weekend of October 2 - 4. We are staying an additional night at our Rick Steves hotel. Does anyone out there have experience with the Dark Rome (City Travel) tours? I've had great success in booking other tours/restaurants far in advance but the Dark Rome site does not yet show availability for October - and it's not that far away. Comments? Suggestions? Thanks much. Liz

I too am going to be in Rome last of Oct. I just booked the same tour with Walks of Italy a couple weeks ago. I have also booked the Pompeii Express Tour and Florence Full Day Tour with City Wonders. Good luck to you!

In October of 2013 I took a few tours with both Dark Rome and Walks of Italy. They were fine tours with both companies. I imagine that Dark Rome will open up October reservations next week (Aug 1), surprised they have not yet done that.
By the way, The Dark Rome web site lists a toll-free U.S. phone number, you might just give them a call.

You can book the underground tour directly with the official site if you want to take it. Right now they are booking up til the end of September but the October slots should open within the next few weeks. This is probably why you cannot book them with Dark Rome.

You will also need to book entry tickets but the total cost per person for the tour/ticket combo is 25 euros. If you have anyone under 18 traveling with you they will get free entry to the colosseum and only pay for the tour.

Thank you for your replies. I sent an email to Dark Rome/City Wonders and they responded, aside from the thank you for your interest, etc, etc, that they don't have specific tours lined up for October 4th yet, but I MIGHT be able to purchase tickets for that date come September. What? Does anyone else out there think this is odd? I guess I'll contact Walks of Italy as my husband and I would very much like to experience this tour and have had no problems booking tours for our other stops months in advance. Thoughts and suggestions for other tours? Thanks, Liz

It's not odd at all. Mid September is when the official colosseum booking site will release tour dates for October and November. Dark Rome is simply waiting to see what will become available before booking any tours. If other tour companies are booking tickets for October or later they are just guessing that the tours will become available and what the times will be.

Personally, I would just book with the official site when they become available but that's up to you.

I was able to book all my Walks of Italy tours for our October Dates. The only one not showing available was a Day tour to Tuscany, I wrote and they said the tour does not operate in October, and sent apologies. So yes, I think some operaters may change up their schedule come October. I was able to find another company, just as reputable with tons of great reviews for our Tuscany tour that does operate in October.

How did you book your restaurants? Did you call or use a website. This is the one thing I am trying to figure out. Did they take reservations this far in advance for October?

Thanks for the information, Donna. Letizia, I had no trouble booking restaurants in France this far in advance by communicating through their websites, but did not have the same experience with restaurants in Italy. The restaurant in the Cinque Terre said to contact them two days before we arrive and the restaurant in Venice wanted a 40 euro deposit in advance for each of us due to the large number of no-shows they've experienced recently. I didn't want to do that so we will depend on our R.S. guidebooks and guides for suggestions. We plan on eating breakfast at our hotels, picnic for lunch as much as possible and have dinner out in the evenings - we look more for good food at a good value rather than a formal 2 hour, 4 course meal which I'd probably fall asleep at anyway. Lol.
