Dancing in St. Mark's Square

My husband and I are looking forward to listening to the music and dancing in St. Mark's Square at night. My question: Do they only play Vivaldi waltzes or do they play a variety of music? We need to start practicing our waltzing if that's all they play! Thanks.

A lot of the music is traditional - but on our trip last summer we heard everything from Strauss to Peggy Lee (40's pop standards) to My Way and even, if memory serves me, Bruce Springsteen, while we were slurping our gelato.

They tend to play classical music but not exclusively. Last summer when I was there they mixed in some American folk and bluegrass songs as well. They even played an instrumental version of "Georgia on my Mind" which was fun, even for an Oregonian. Enjoy the dancing, I still have vivid memories of ending each night in Venice this summer doing that and it was one of the most memorable events of my last trip (which given how well the trip went is saying something).

Dance, dance, dance. Just have fun! They play lots of differnt music and you have diffenent cafes to choose from. My sister and her huband love to dance and dance when they want too. Dance and create you own beautiful memories. I remember my niece and her then boyfriend dancing to a car radio playing "Under the Boardwalk" in an Atlantic City Casion parking garage 20 years ago. It still in my memory today. I was in Vienna in a park and people were dancing to Stauss waltzes and I wanted to dance with them and still wish I had. So dance when the spirit moves you and create your own beautiful memories.

Thanks for your memories of what music is played in St. Mark's Square. We've been taking dance lessons for a couple of years in preparation for waltzing there--and the Viennesse waltz is a difficult dance to learn. That's why I was interested in knowing if they played music other than waltzes. It sounds like they do! Again, I appreciate your insights.

Depending on the weather, there may be one band playing or a bunch. There is definitely a variety. I heard classical music from one place and recognized some Sinatra tunes in another. The idea is to entice people to sit down, pay a cover, buy food and wine. I think Rick suggests dancing in the square without getting a table. I think it's okay but would seem really strange to dance all night that way. Better to find a place you like and spring for the cover or dance once and move on.
