Daily Euro limit

Hi All,

What is the daily limit for withdrawing Euros from an atm? Thanks.

It depends on the bank and your card. Most are €200-300 per day. Some are €500, but not many in my experience.

There are two different limits involved:

  1. The limit your debit card issuing bank has set. For most US bank customers that is US$300. It can be set higher if you ask your bank and they agree. Some accounts have higher limits depending on the type of account to begin with.

  2. The ATM owner sets a maximum withdrawal limit per transaction. This information is usually not posted. If you ask for an amount you know is within your daily card limit and get nothing, ask for a lesser amount. if you get that amount, you can then try an additional transaction or two until you either get the amount you want or reach your card limit.

My daily ATM withdrawal limit is $700, but if I try to make it in one transaction, the bank will lock the card (as happened to me in Sicily on a U.S. military base). Had to call the bank to get the card unlocked.

What Mark said.

I just want to emphasize something he mentioned. If you ask for more than that particular ATM's limit, even if it's well within your own bank's limit, the ATM will usually just reject the transaction. It will usually not say why. And the machine's limit is only sometimes posted on the machine's screen before you do the transaction.

So, if your withdrawal request is rejected, do it again and ask for half the amount. Or, pick an amount shown as one of the defaults.
For instance, it's common that the machine will ask you to choose from something like "€50, €100, €200, €300, or other." If I've asked for €480 and it's rejected, I'll ask for €300.

I always try to get an odd amount ending in 30 or 80 (so, if I want €500, I'll instead ask for €480 or €530). This way, I get at least one €10 and one €20 note. But as I said above, I can't always get this. It does vary from machine to machine, as well as country to country.

Do convert your own bank's daily limit into euros before you go. Arriving, jet lagged and still thinking in dollars, it's good to know how much you want to ask for from your first withdrawal.

Just like here in the US, sometimes the machine is running low on cash and so limits what you can get, regardless of what limits have been set by the banks.

As I've mentioned here before, DeutscheBank will give especially high withdrawal amounts in a single transaction (as long as your bank agrees) and they are located in many Italian towns.

2 other DeutscheBank pluses ( although my experience is only in Spain):
Their ATMs didn't charge a 5€ fee that most other banks charged.
I was given a choice all 20s--I appreciated being able to avoid the difficult to use 50s.
