Cycling in Rome- is it insane?

Hello All,
I read in Ricks Italy book that he believes cycling to relatively safe in Rome.
Both my wife and myself will be bringing bicycles to Italy.
Other than doing some riding in the Dolomites, we'll be participating in an incredible cycling event called L'Eroica. This will be my second time cycling in Italy.
Generally, it has been my experience that Italian drivers and motorcyclists are respectful of cyclists. However, Rome is a big city with lots of cars.
We will be staying in the Campo di Fiori area and I have thought about riding to the Vatican, Coloseum, Pantheon and The Appian way. Rick has suggested the back streets when cycling.
Is there not a Pedestrian way along the Tiber?
Has anyone on this discussion group cycled in Rome?
Regards,
David

I do lot of cycling but have not cycled in Rome but think I have the eye for it when I am there. I would not simply because I don't think it would save much in the way of time. I would not have any reservations about cycling through Rome but for hitting the tourist sights I would not do it. Too much traffic -- people, cars, vespa, bikes -- and the roads and sidewalks are not in great shape. If you are running a heavy tire -- maybe a 38 or 40 it might be OK. But a skinny tire will not hold up. The Appian way on Sunday would be a different matter since it is somewhat closed to vehicular traffic on Sunday. I would also have a little concern about security.

Insane? No. Suicidal is probably the better term for it. It's not that cars or motorcycles will intentionally run you down, it's that they aren't careful drivers and don't assume they might run into a hazard they weren't expecting.

Riding in low traffic times might be safe, but that's when Roman drivers regularly run red lights full speed because they don't expect traffic.

I think renting bikes in an area with no traffic might be fun. I haven't done the Via Appia but I think it's traffic free. It's cobblestone, so I would rather rent a sturdy bike than subject my bike to the abuse (there and in baggage).

Participating in a cycling event, however, sounds great and should be safe since drivers will expect to encounter bikes.

We love to ride, but not in Rome. Try the combination of the subway, buses and walking to get around. Remember that Rome is really a rather small city. Have a great race and trip!

Yes, insane and unnecessary. You will be choking on bus fumes and it is very dangerous in my opinion. A good pair of shoes is all you need.

Hello All,
Thanks for the advice.
I'll decide once I'm there.
