Customs question for flight to Paris

I am flying to Paris soon and am starting from Boston, then change planes and a lay over in Toronto then go on to Paris. My question is... can my luggage get checked through directly from Boston to Paris and then i can go through customs there one time when I arrive in France? Or will I have to claim my luggage in Toronto and go through customs there (since it is a different country) then check it in again for the flight from Toronto to Paris? I'm just not sure what the normal procedure is. Thanks

Alice,

The answer will depend on whether you've booked code share flights or separate flights. Code share flights are usually on one ticket, but separate boarding passes will be issued for each segment. Checked baggage with code share typically goes straight through to the final destination.

Here's an example.....

A flight booked from my home airport to Calgary to Frankfurt to Dresden, with the first two flights with Air Canada and the last flight with Lufthansa (a Star Alliance partner airline). Luggage is checked at the home airport and never seen until it appears on the carousel in Dresden. The luggage is handled differently on the return trip, but I won't bother elaborating on that.
