Customary tipping for tour guides??

What is the appropriate tip amount for::
1. Shore excursions when you have a driver for 6-8 hours?
2. Walking tours of sites in Rome for 3-4 hours.

Is it a percentage of the total cost?

You will get a lot of responses saying, NO TIP. It is personal preference. Will general give the driver 5% or little less and 10% if the tour guide was really good. Some that are marginal I have not tipped.

No need to tip. The price is the price. No need for any type of percentage.

Wages are low in Italy. I have had some terrific walking tour guides and when I give 10 euro it seems much appreciated. In my experience most people on English-speaking tours do tip.

Why do you assume that Italians aren't paid enough for the jobs they do? Italy is not a tipping culture like the U.S. is. There is no need to tip for anything. Most English speaking customers come from tipping cultures so that's why they tip. If you want to round up the bill at a restaurant or leave the change when buying a coffee that's fine but a 10 euros tip is not ever necessary.
