Custom Made Shoes in Rome

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had custom shoes made while in Rome? My wife is interested in splurging on this as her one treat while we are in Rome this summer. We have been looking online but only seem to find info from fellow travelers that is five or more years old.

Any insight from any RS travelers who have done this in the past year or two would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Di San Giacomo gets a lot of press. I haven't had them make a pair of sandals for me but based on reviews and articles, that's probably the one I would look at. Just a few of the many mentions:

[This seems like a bizarre waste of time and money. Women's hi-healed shoes look disgustingly uncomfortable; they look like they inhibit women from being able to walk well. Sandals are a bad choice too; I would want to see on a woman, flat-soled shoes which are not too flimsy, which she can comfortably walk around in for an entire day. Comfort comes first and style is a distant second consideration.]

Mike, Steve didn't say what style of shoe his wife is interesting in having made nor how she intends to wear them. While I didn't notice the same in Rome, bespoke, handmade sandals looked to be popular shopping purchases in Capri.

Whatever the case, I doubt very much that she intends to wear whatever custom shoes she has made for sightseeing.

Nothing like custom-made shoes. When I was a child, my father imported handmade shoes from Italy and I would get a couple of pair custom-made when we visited the factory. He retired when I was a teen, just when that perk would have come in handy. But I remember my footprint being traced onto paper.

You're welcome, Steve. Sorry I couldn't recommend anything from firsthand experience but I didn't get the "shoe gene" most women have! :O)

There was one more I ran across but for the life of me I can't tell if it's still in operation, and their website wasn't functioning for me at all; could be my browser, though:

IF they're still open, these shoes would be very expensive, and I saw mention somewhere that it took at least 3-4 weeks to get them (they're mailed if not picked up in Rome.) I'm guessing sandals are the most popular "custom" type because of the much shorter time it takes to make them and the price tag. If those aren't what she's after, she might consider a high-end Italian brand of "off the rack" shoe such as Ferragamo, Bruno Magli, etc?
