Custom Made Italian Suits

Hello, In 2021 we were in Tuscany and while sightseeing in Florence we saw a number of Men's Tailor Shops that were advertising custom made Italian style suits in two days and the starting price of 130 Euro seemed reasonable. Has anyone had any experience with any of the tailor shops in Florence? We are booked to travel to Tuscany in September of this year and any advice would help. Thank you kindly. Werner

I would be very interested also, as I live in Florence and it looks to me that 130 euros barely buy an off-the-rack pair of trousers in a reputable shop...

The suits are available at Walmartile, JC Panini and Targettio. All on Via Acquisto Economico in the east end of Santa Croce.

Not in Italy, but in another European country. A group of us went to such a shop, several ordering suits. A big show of looking at cloth samples was made. What was delivered fell into two categories: one was suits that were almost certainly off the rack just tweaked a bit here and there, and just sized to the person**. The other category was suits that were so crudely sewn together as to look like they were 1950 Soviet era.

I have no knowledge or experience if that is the situation in Tuscany, but when I know what a good Italian suit costs here, I doubt the quality you get for €130 is what you'd be hoping for. But who knows? Give it a shot and report. It might be one of those unique cultural experiences we're looking for. In any case just go in a shop and check it out.

** one clue were the remainder of some tags that appear to have been cut out of a couple of suits. My guess is that they were factory seconds of name brands that were being repurposed, and probably nothing wrong with that.

LOL, Gunderson…

OP, I see it’s your first post. Don’t take our humor amiss. It brightens the day. But honestly, a suit in my area will easily cost more than $150 at a department store. I would think €130 would be suspect. But it could be a fun and different experience (and people often pay more than that for a 2 hour tour). I just wouldn’t have high expectations of a high-end product.

As someone who has tailored men's suits, finding a custom-made suit for €130 seems highly unlikely. I have a feeling it will be something akin to Stan's experience. Even in Italy, where prices are cheaper, I very much doubt a skilled tailor will be selling a custom-fitted suit for that amount.

The place where I have seen tailors making up suits in a couple of days is Mumbai; there you can find people working round the night and I know people that have some very nice suits made up. A dear colleague of mine that passed away last December was actually laid to rest in his beautiful Mumbai suit, I was with him the day he got it.

I do not remember many places in central Florence where bespoke suits are made, just a place in via del Parione advertising bespoke suits for much more than eur 130, and Liverano in via dei Fossi where I suspect the only price cap is the sky. Even there, I am afraid it takes much more than a couple of days.

I don't think you need to travel to Milan to find great tailors.
Liverano & Liverano or Luigi Cappelli in Florence are among the top 5 in Italy, and I'm just mentioning two that come to mind.
However for 130 euro they might give you only one sleeve.

Gotta ask--- how much is an arm and a leg?
