Custom Clearance in Rome (FCO)

Hi, Does anyone know how long will it take (approximately, of course 😊) to pass the custom checkpoint at FCO, arriving Sunday 8:20 am in May, from JFK? We will only have carry-on and personal purse/backpack. Trying to make a reservations for the train and just have no idea how long it will take. Don't want to miss the train or waste time at the airport. Thanks so much.

What train to where? A train from the airport to Rome? A train to Naples, or Florence or Venice or....?

If your plane lands on time the consensus likely will be to allow yourself not less than 3 hours.

If you provide more specifics, you improve your odds of getting a useful answer

It is Passport Control that takes time. You simply walk through the “nothing to declare” line for Customs (assuming you have nothing to declare). Passport Control can take awhile depending on how many are in front of you, how many planes, landed when your did, how many agents are on duty. FCO now has e-gates so if you line up for that processing, you may clear faster. We did so in Milan. Info here https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en-/e-gates.

Still, I would not reserve a train but instead buy a ticket when you land.

Voting with Laurel and Joe that there's no way to know IF your plane will arrive on time or how many flights will be will be coming in at the same time as yours. Best plan is to just buy train tickets once you've arrived at FCO and passed through immigration, if you're coming off an international flight.

Thanks for the replies. We are just taking the train into Rome. I guess we'd just have to buy the tickets when we are through with it. Since it's a short ride, it shouldn't matter much.
Laurel-Thanks for the tip for "nothing to declare".

Nisha,

Thanks for asking this question.
Laurel, thanks for letting us know about the egates. I hope they are working when I arrive in a few week.

Nisha_K, there are no reserved seats on Airport and local trains: it won't matter for sure. You are trying to purchase in advance a NYC subway ticket for the A line serving the JFK airport.
