A heads up for anyone coming to Venice. It’s probably my favorite city in the world. That being said as long as you stay out of St Mark’s Sq and the
Rialto area crowds are not bad. We’re staying in a residential area in the Dorsoduro right on a small canal and it’s pretty awesome. This is our second time here. Get out early and go out in the evening. Off to the Dolomites tomorrow. Doing Rick’s buddies bar tour again tonight. Happy travels! One more thing, Florence was crazy busy. Only spent the afternoon but it has made Venice a walk in the park.
We just returned from Rome and Florence. The crowds were overwhelming.
We were in Venice (10th trip) last June, and we agree about staying off the beaten path in the city. It's much more pleasurable out of the crowds.
After 52 years of European travel, we're just about through with the large cities and tourist sights we've been to before. It's the same with large U.S. cities. Thankfully there are many still places we've not been to that may have not been discovered by the masses.

I so agree with you. We are grateful that we saw these places way back when and have zero desire to return with the exception of London. We remember the days not so long ago when you could just walk up to a site and get in without a reservation months in advance. Now with the travel days remaining to us we are going to more far flung places.
