Current conditions in Cinque Terra -- March 2012

We just returned from Italy and spent 2 days in Manarola, Cinque Terra (March 24-25). We had a wonderful stay When we began our trip to Cinque Terra, we drove from Arezzo and decided to take a scenic drive by going north to Monterosso and then proceed south to Manarola. Big mistake. There were no signs posted to let us know that the road was completely and dangerously washed out between Monterosso and Vernazza. We only found out once we got to the end where a blockade had been erected. We turned around and headed back to La Spezia to reach Manarola. It was a long and winding detour, but still an adventure. Upon reaching Manarola, we discovered that the hiking trail between it and Corniglia had been closed, probably due to the mudslides. Regardless, one can still take a train to get to Vernazza and the rest of the Cinque Terra, and continue hiking everywhere else. Definitely worth the visit . . . beautiful people, scenery and weather.
