CT, Tuscany, and then to Venice

We are staying in CT for 2 nights the middle of October. I'm thinking of taking the train to Lucca on Sunday, Oct 18, spending the rest of the day there, night too, and then renting a car on Monday for two days. We would like to end up in Venice by Wednesday evening. We want to see as much of Tuscany as we can in the two full days. Would it be too much to go down to Volterra and that area and then drive Wednesday to Venice? Or are there nice areas, not too touristy, between Lucca & Venice? Should we plan to drive to Venice, or drop the car in Florence and then train to Venice? We are planning to spend three nights in Venice, so could see that area once we're there. Thanks for your help.

I think you might have fun using Rome2Rio.com. You can plug in destinations and check drive times.

For example, Lucca to Volterra is a little over an hour drive time. Spend a few hours there, then on to another town, maybe Montalcino (a 90-minute drive) and spend the night Monday.

Tuesday you could drive to Montepulciano via Pienza (a fabulously beautiful drive), then on to Arezzo via Cortona, spending a night in Arezzo.

Wednesday you could A) drive to Venezia via Ravenna or B) take the train either from Firenze or Arezzo.

There are many permutations to play with.
