We are going to Siena from CT on the train. We planned on stopping in Florence, at the airport, to pick up a car and drive to Siena where we're going to stay for two nights before heading to Orvieto for 3 nights. Question: Is there a better place to get off the train and rent a car other than Florence?
Three weeks ago we took the train from CT to Siena. We got a cab from the Siena train station to our hotel, which was 1 block off the Campo. We spent two days in Siena without a car. When we were done with Siena we took a cab from our hotel to the Hertz rental car place, which is near the Siena train station. We drove the car for several days in Tuscany. When we were done with the car we returned it to the Hertz place in Orvieto and took a train from there to Rome. You can walk from the Hertz place in Orvieto to the train station and there are frequent trains from Orvieto to Rome. I thought this worked VERY well because it kept us from having to drive or park in difficult cities.
I think the above suggestion is a good idea. I drive all over Europe and have been lost numerous times in Siena and parking is horrible... just see Siena without a car and pick it up when you leave.
