my hubby and I need to get from the c.t. to Perugia in Umbria. is there a train that crosses or do you have to go back to Florance.Or is it a nice drive and would you need to back track to Florance to hit the Motorway . HELP PLEASE Gina

There are trains on that route, but all have at least one change. Your choices will depend to some extent on what time of day you want to travel.
If I were making that trip, I'd probably choose the train departing La Spezia Centrale at 07:59, arriving Perugia at 13:01 (Time 5H:02M, 2 changes in Pisa Centrale and Firenze S.M.N., compulsory reservations for the first leg). I chose La Spezia as the departure point, as you'll likely have to go through there anyway, and you didn't specify which of the C.T. villages you were staying in. There's another train departing La Spezia at 09:19, also with two changes.
The majority of trains on that route have either two or three changes, except for one that leaves at 04:50 which has one change in Firenze.

Florence is pretty much on the way from the CT to Perugia, so I don't understand your question. A car would be easy if you pick it up in La Spezia or Pisa. From either city, you have Autostrade all the way to Perugia.
