When we leave Cinque Terre, we plan on trying to stop along the way to a couple of places before ending up in Florence. Is it a hassle to get to any of the smaller Tuscan towns by train or does everything go back through Florence anyhow. Should we just decide to go directly to Florence, drop luggage and then head out?
I am assuming you are leaving CT early in the morning. Look at stopping in Lucca and Pisa on the way to Florence. From La Spezia, Lucca is about 90 minutes and Pisa from Lucca is only 30 minutes. Pisa to Florence is 60 minutes.
Thank you - and yes we are leaving early morning.
Lucca and Pisa have compact historical centers that are easy to see on a short visit. Siena has more for visitors to enjoy, spread around streets that are more winding and hilly, so I would want the maximum time there that you could allocate in a day (if not an overnight).
