We will be in Florence for 5 days and then have 2 nights to spend elsewhere. Would you recommend CT or some place in Tuscany? Any other place: We do fly back out of Florence early the next morning so would have to return for our final night in Florence.

The nice thing about doing the CT is that you'll see a completely different part of Italy - the beautiful Ligurian coast. What time of year will you be there?

In mid-September. We are considering renting a car since we will be traveling from Florence to the next destination and then back to Florence to catch our flight. Is that nuts?

The Cinque Terre offers some diversity. Start in the Cinque Terre so you won't split your nights in Florence and end in Florence. It's much better use of your time. Renting a car is crazy because Florence has too many ZTL zones, and the Cinque Terre is best seen by train, and it's only a few hours by train between the two, and less expensive than a car rental.

I wish we could start in CT but we do have business obligations in Florence first on those specific days.

I think the CT would be a lovely change from Florence, and it will be beautiful in mid-September.
