CT in January

We are spending time in Switzerland, Dec. 22-28, itinerary mapped out with help from all of you, taking a train to Italy and staying in San Gimiggiano for several days, taking day trips to Florence, etc.On our way there, we go through CT, not the best time there, but should we spend a day and night there, seeing the towns? We have 48 hours flexibility right now in our schedule, although the time is near! Thanks so much.

It should be possible to spend a few days in the C.T. in January, although not sure what the weather will be like? Keep in mind also that some of the lodgings and other facilites are closed in the winter months.

You might want to check the listings in Rick's Guidebooks to find a location that's open. You'll probably have more success with that by basing in Monterosso al Mare, as it's the largest of the five villages and has the most tourist facilities (and the nicest beach).

Happy travels!

Thanks, Ken, That's just the kind of advice we needed, considering the time of year we will be there. We tried to contact one place in Monterosso and never heard back from them. Wondering if we should keep trying to pin that down by email or phone now with others listed in RS book. How big a risk are we taking by showing up with our two teenagers and looking for a place that day?

Thanks, Kent. We can do that - hang loose. I've travelled alone without firm "plans" but not with kids, so I'm more nervous about that. We pick up a car in Pisa for a few days, so maybe go on down to Lucca if no success in CT?
