We are planning to do CT the week-end of May 3-5. We (2 couples) were thinking about not reserving hotel ahead of time and just playing by ear that week-end. This is our first trip to Italy so looking for advice on whether this is good idea or not. Suggestions on a base town would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Thank you!
Vernaza & I would suggest making a reservation @ http://www.elisabettacarro.it/
Michelle, I would highly recommend getting accommodations booked in the Cinque Terre soon! May is a popular time, and it could be very busy, especially on a weekend. To provide an example, I often start booking in February for travel in September, and even that early I sometimes have problems. Everyone has their favourites on the five towns, and my preference is Monterosso. It's the largest of the five, so has the greatest number of hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. It also has the nicest sandy beaches (with lounge chairs and umbrellas). If you have a copy of the Italy 2013 Guidebook, there are lots of listings for accommodations in each of the towns in various price ranges. I usually stay at Hotel Villa Steno, but at this late date you may have trouble getting a booking there. You could also try their "sister property", Hotel Pasquale. For a list of Monterosso hotels, check this website: http://www.rebuildmonterosso.com/p/visitors-information.html Happy travels!
Friday and Saturday nights are the most popular with Italians and tourists. I recommend you get reservations for the weekend, especially since you will want two rooms.
We went in the middle of May 2010, 4 of us and stayed in Riomaggiore. Had a bit of a rough time finding a place for 4 with just a couple weeks advance notice. I'd say reserve asap.
