Are the views on the ferry boats adequate or should we take a private boat tour to get good views of the CT towns?

View from the ferries are just fine: no need for a private tour.

The view from the Ferries is great so I've never seen any need for a private boat tour. However you can certainly do that if you wish, and this is one example......
