Cruise stop in Nafplion

Our cruise stops in Nafplion and that looks to be the closest to Athens that we will be. How hard is it to get to Athens and see the Acropolis from this port? We will only in port about 8 hours.

FYI - You might get better responses in the Eastern European thread. Questions for Greece go there. To answer your question - 8 hours is not enough. By bus it is 2-3 hours one way. However, Nafplio is a wonderful town and you could get to Myceanae, which are pretty good ruins that date from the era of Homer and the Illiad.

Douglas is totally right. With only 8 hours, you don't have a prayer of making it back and forth to Athens and seeing the Acropolis. But you'll enjoy Nafplion itself, especially if you hit the Antica Gelateria di Roma, for the best gelato outside Italy, plus a wonderful atmosphere.

Nafplion is a beautiful city and not even close to Athens. If you want to see Athens and the Acropolis via a cruise, which is what we just did last month, you need to take a cruise that stops at Peiraias, the port city of Athens. Nafplion is for touring the most historic areas of the Peloponnese, so why would you want to miss that? The Acropolis, which, I know, you have to see (we felt the same way) had at least two thousand people on it when we were there and even though they have been rebuilding the structures for over twenty years, is still not very appealing. Forget it for this cruise and just plan to see it next time. As for Nafplion, we used this city as our base to see the Greek side of the Trojan War. Mycenae, Epidavros - either of those two side trips would be my choice off of a cruise ship that stops at Nafplion.
