Cruise Ship stopping in Salerno

My husband and I have been to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento, Paestum, Amalfi by land and sea, numerous times. Looking for some suggestions. Most of the cruise ship tours include the above mentioned items. We do like to taste wines but most companies I contacted can't accommodate due to time in port. Has anyone spent the day in Salerno? I have researched it on line and it looks like there maybe enough to do for a day.

My wife and I stayed in Salerno for a couple days, a few years ago. It's a pleasant city, less touristed than Sorrento, and a good base to see the area. There is an old town and a seafront promenade for strolling, and some nice restaurants. The cathedral is a good one, but other than that, there isn't much in the way of tourist attractions in the town itself (which I guess is a reason it's less touristed). As you've seen all the others places you mention (and Naples too?), I think it would be enjoyable for a relatively low-key day in a nice small to medium-size Italian city without big ticket sights, if that's what you want, but not much more than that. As noted, we used it more as a stepping stone to see the other places in the region such as Paestum than a destination in itself, but we liked the time we spent in the town.

Have you been to Caserta to see the palace and eat pizza? About a 30 minute train ride from Napoli Centrale.

Sights in Palermo:

  • Lovely waterfront.

  • Well-preserved historic center. Nice passeggiata.

  • Duomo, Piazza Alfano: 11C, remodeled 18C; most beautiful medieval church in Italy. Atrium columns from Paestum. Highly detailed 13C mosaics in nave and Cappella delle Crociate. Spectacular crypt. www.cattedraledisalerno.it

  • Museo Diocesano, Largo Plebiscito 12: Exhibiting most of Duomo’s treasures. I think closed Wed.

  • Museo Archeologico Provinciale, Via San Benedetto 28: Excellent showcase for Local finds. Closed Mon?

  • Giardino della Minerva, Via Ferrante Sanseverino 1: Botanical garden with 260 plants on pretty terraces with some fountains and ponds. La Tiseneria tea room at top. Great views at sunset. Closed Mon? www.giardinodellaminerva.it

  • Castello di Arechi, Via Benedetto Croce: 8C Byzantine fort twice modified, most recently in 16C. Bus service from Piazza XXIV Maggio. Closed Mon? www.ilcastellodiarechi.it

Naples has much, much more. If you haven't spent time there, that would be a very good option. There are frequent regional trains costing only 5.10 euros each way. Tickets for the M1 Metro (subway) line in Naples are cheap.

Hi Anne,
Salerno has a decent Old Town plus a pleasant waterfront. But for us, its most unique attraction was Minerva's Botanical Garden (nice cafe). Some claim that the Cathedral is a must-see.
