If you had one day (basically a half day) to see Naples as part of a cruise port of call, what kind of plans would you make? I am opting not to do one of the cruise excursions, so I have the freedom to create my own excursion. I am not looking to go to Pompeii or other road trips, just local. I would love to tap into the street food scene, experience Italian/local specialties, and marketplaces. Looking for itineraries, walking tours, even hosted tours...
well, if it really is a half day, I would lean TOWARDS the cruise ship excursions as it is easier for snafus to delay your return to ship on a tight timeline.
Not sure how many hours it is, but if I were to do a DIY Naples visit on a tight timeline maybe a food tour or a visit to the archeological museum or something else in Naples proper.....
Since you need to maximize your short time there, hire a private guide to show you his/her city!
Google cruise ship tour from Naples,
You will find there are lots of options. We used private guides and saved some money, even though it was a private tour. The operators are aware of the cruise ship arrival and departure times.
The risk is that typically you pay in advance. We accepted the risk and were not ripped off.
We booked the guides direct.
If you wanted an independent dose of Pompeii, without going to the Pompeii site, go to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples itself. It’s got the actual artifacts recovered at Pompeii, including the real Alexander the Great wall mosaic. That could easily fill 3 hours, or less if you are short on time.
We had pizza at the actual, original Pizzeria da Michele, but had to take a number and wait outside (strolling the neighborhood) for a long time. There are a lot of other pizzerias that likely give you an authentic Margherita without such a delay.
