Is there an easy way to get from the cruise port to Herculaneum that is less expensive than the overpriced ship excursions?
Which cruise port? Naples?
Yes from Naples to Herculaneum.
Debra, The least expensive way is to take a taxi to the Circumvesuvuiana train it's located in the lower level of the Napoloi Centrale train station located in Piazza Garibaldi. The taxi will cost under $10.00 and the train ticket is about $4.oo per person. It's about a 15 min. trip to Herculaneum (Ercolano Scavi) and if memory serves me right it's 9 stops from Naples. Do get a guide, with the money you saved by doing the transportation yourselves. If you have time in Naples,
the Archaeological Museum is fantastic!
It's even cheaper if you take the bus to the train station. We were able to pick up a bus right in the front of the port that dropped us off right by the station, and it was the same ticket that was good for the train.
Right on-we took the bus too! Wait till you see what the ship charges for that excursion. This sounds crazy but our first trip we took the train to Pompeii then on to Sorrento. From Sorrento the ferry to Capri and the jet boat back to the port. Of course we thouht we would never return but we did like most people do!
You need to purchase two UNICO CAMPANIA U2 tickets (one in each direction) for 1.80 Euros each, which cover both the local Naples city bus/tram to Napoli Centrale Station as well as the Circumvesuviana train (direction Sorrento). Get off the train after 16 minutes at ERCOLANO SCAVI (9th stop). Punch the ticket the first time you board the bus or train. You can buy the ticket at many newsstands, tobacconists, and even some cafe/bars. Total cost for the public transportation is 3.60 Euros per person. Add 11 Euros for the entry to Ercolano Scavi.
